Conca de Barberà

Conca de Barberà is a Catalan wine region around the town of Montblanc south of Barcelona. The area is about 30 kilometers from the coast and it is enclosed between DO Tarragona (south-east side) and DO Costers del Segre (north-west side).

The area has been hit hard by an economic crisis in the last century. As a result, many independent wineries had to stop or continue in a cooperative. The consequences of this are still visible today. Conca de Barberà is still home to many cooperatives and few independent wineries.

Conca de Barberà lies like a valley enclosed between the mountains. As a result, there is little influence from the nearby sea. The wines are generally slightly lower in alcohol than most Mediterranean wines. This is primarily due to the cool nights that slow down and control the ripening of the grape. Secondly, both typical grape varieties of this area (Parellada and Trepat) have the property of producing wines with a low alcohol percentage.
